Breast Aesthetics is a surgical procedure to correct breast shape, unwanted tissue deformities, sagging and to provide a natural and aesthetic appearance. Although there is no standard breast size, breast shape and size should compliment an individual’s body type of proportion. For this reason, patient awareness is as important as the physician’s knowledge and experience.
Breast aesthetics can be applied in the following cases;
The different types of breast aesthetics include, breast lift, augmentation, reduction, reconstruction and gynecomastia.
This surgical procedure changes the volume and overall shape of the breast. Individuals who think their breasts are too small may experience self-confidence issues, in such cases a breast augmentation procedure can be considered. Breast implant surgery is the most popular procedure within this group. At the first consultation, the size of the implant is discussed and decided together with the physician.
The procedure can also be applied in the following cases too;
Intense weight gain, anatomical reasons, and large breasts can cause neck and back pain and be the reason for poor posture. A breast reduction surgery removes excess fat tissue to reduce the size of the breast and provide a more healthy and aesthetic form. A reduction mammoplasty can solve major physical complaints such as shoulder, neck and back pain, irritation of skin tissue around the breats and skin problems such as eczema.
A Mastopexy is a surgical procedure to correct sagging and deformed shaped breasts. The lifting procedure in this surgery corrects the deformities and gives new form to the breasts. The effects of breastfeeding after pregnancy, fluctuating weight gain and loss, sagging and aging effects can also be corrected with breast aesthetics. In a breast lift surgery, excess skin is removed and the tissue is reshaped. Where necessary, the breast can be shaped by adding a silicone prosthesis.
This procedure is a breast reduction operation for men. Gynecomastia is usually caused by fluctuations in testosterone hormone levels. It is the name given to abnormal but benign growth of breast tissue in men. Gynecomastia can affect one breast in some cases and both breasts in others. When both breasts are affected by irregularities they can reach different sizes. Causes of gynecomastia include natural hormonal changes, heavy drug use, substance and alcohol abuse.
Patients who wish to undergo a breast aesthetic procedure will first need to be screened. The suitability of the surgery is decided in line with the patient’s desires. The operation is mostly performed under general anesthetic and is performed with different techniques according to the type of surgery that is to be performed.
There are four types of breast aesthetic operations, these are;
Breast augmentation surgery is an aesthetic operation performed in cases of discomfort with breast size and shape. Before the operation certain examinations will take place. The results of the tests and the patient’s desires will be discussed, as well as the suitability of the operation for the patient’s body type. The breast size is decided by considering factors such as the anatomical structure of the person and skin elasticity.
The person who will undergo this surgery must be over 18 years of age.
The use of blood thinners, smoking and alcohol should be stopped 10 days before the operation. The operation is performed under general anesthetic
The implant is inserted through a 3-4 cm incision around the nipple or under the breast and placed under the breast tissue or under the muscle in front of the rib cage.
After the silicone is placed, it is closed with aesthetic stitches and bandaged. The procedure takes 1-2 hours.
Breast reduction surgery is an aesthetic operation that is generally preferred due to health problems rather than aesthetic problems. These reasons may include back and lower back pain due to breast size, under-breast allergies and infections. The operation involves the process of reshaping the breast by removing the fat tissue in the breast through a minimal incision in the nipple or under the breast. Patients must have completed anatomical development to be eligible for the operation. The operation is performed under general anesthetic and the operation time is approximately 2 hours.
Breast lift surgery is an aesthetic operation to correct sagging and deformation in the breast area. Where required, silicone implants are also added to give form. While tissue is removed from the large breast, breast tissue is shaped by placing implants in the small breast. Breast lift operation is performed under general anesthetic, and the operation time is approximately 2 hours.
Increase in breast tissue may be due to excess fat or excess mammary glands. Before the operation, the increase in the amount of mammary gland (glandular) or fatty tissue (lipomatous) is observed via an ultrasonography.
In cases where there is no extreme skin sagging, excess fat tissue is removed by liposuction and the breast is reduced in size. In case of excess skin, the excess breast tissue and skin are surgically removed. The scar formed after the procedure does fade over time. The surgery is performed under general local or general anesthetic. Patients can expect to return to their daily routine within 3-4 days after the operation.
After the operation, the body recovers in about 6 weeks.
In the first 48 hours after the operation, applying ice to the relevant area at regular intervals minimizes edema and swelling. Drinking plenty of water is also important for edema elimination.
The sports bra prescribed by the physician should be worn for 6-8 weeks.
Since the implants are placed under the breast tissue, they do not come into contact with the milk ducts hence do not cause any damage.
Scars left from the surgery are located either under the breast or the areola and are not noticeable. Patients should not expect the scars to completely disappear after surgery, however they will become more faint overtime.
Sagging may re-occur as a result of uncontrolled weight gain and loss of tissue elasticity due to aging.
If the surgery is performed via the nipple, temporary numbness and loss of sensation may occur. The possibility is extremely low when the implant is placed under the breast.
According to research, there have been no instances encountered where breast aesthetic surgery has prevented breastfeeding.
The patient and physician together will decide on the shape of the silicone to be inserted according to the patient's body and breast structure.
Individuals who are uncomfortable with the size and shape of their breasts, individuals with sagging, symmetry issues and deformities, over the age of 18 years old, completed full body development, and who do not have any health conditions that may prevent them from having surgery.
